The Anzac Memorial stands at the western approach of the Anzac Bridge at Rozelle. The bronze sculpture of an Australian ANZAC soldier was unveiled on ANZAC Day in 2000 faces west in the "rest on arms reverse" drill position holding a Lee-Enfield rifle. A sculpture of a New Zealand ANZAC soldier facing east was added to a plinth on the opposite side of the road in 2008. Both statues were created by Alan Somerville, with sand collected from Ari Burnu beach in Gallipolli, Turkey placed underneath. Today is ANZAC Day, which marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War in 1915.
